Project CAEC Math Prep Scoreboost Workbook

Developing the Math CAEC Prep Workbooks is a comprehensive educational project designed to prepare adult learners for the Canadian Adult Education Credential (CAEC) Mathematics test. The project has resulted in a series of targeted workbooks, each focusing on specific mathematical domains required for the exam.

Project Overview and Structure

The project produced four distinct workbooks, each structured to guide students through specific learning outcomes and cognitive complexities:

  • Workbook 1: Mental Math – Focuses on computational fluency without a calculator, covering basic operations, integers, decimals, and fractions.

  • Workbook 2: Number Sense, Patterns, and Relations – Addresses real-world contexts involving percentages, proportions, linear equations, and logical reasoning.

  • Workbook 3: Measurement and Geometry – Guides learners through unit conversions (SI and Imperial), similar shapes, the Pythagorean Theorem, and 3D volume/surface area.

  • Workbook 4: Data Analysis and Probability – Covers interpreting tables, graphs, and spreadsheets, as well as calculating central tendency (mean, median, mode) and probability.

Instructional Design

Each workbook utilizes the Scoreboost® framework to maximize learning efficiency:

  • Actionable Progress Tracking: Every unit includes a Pre-Test to create a study plan and a Post-Test to assess readiness for the actual CAEC exam.

  • Lesson Components: Each lesson features a "Concept and Recall" section for terminology, followed by "Strategies and Demonstrations" through examples and challenge questions.

  • Integrated Support: "Think Tips" are provided throughout to develop critical thinking, and "Test Wise" hints offer specific advice for navigating exam-style questions.

Cognitive Complexity Levels

The materials are designed to meet specific cognitive domain targets, ensuring students can handle varying levels of difficulty:

  • Low Complexity (15%–25%): Items requiring recall of facts, definitions, or simple procedures.

  • Moderate Complexity (50%–80%): Items requiring the application of multiple concepts and decision-making on how to approach a problem.

  • High Complexity (5%–15%): Items requiring abstract reasoning, generalization, and judgment in context.

Alignment with CAEC Outcomes

The workbooks are explicitly mapped to CAEC Outcomes, such as:

  • Computational Fluency (M): Solving problems without a calculator.

  • Understanding Patterns (P): Using logic and linear equations to describe relationships.

  • Measurement and Geometry (G): Quantifying measurable attributes and converting units.

  • Data Analysis (D): Interpreting data and solving probability problems.
